Phosphenes: Ephemera (1)

Description
In carrying on with the tactics and intentions of my previous work in this series, I wanted to push the boundaries further and see just how much more I could manipulate the image during the enlarging and developing process. Not only by continuing my techniques of mixing chemicals and working out of order, but also this time by folding the paper. As I worked, I was interested in how these harsh lines and bends acted as textural elements on the surface of the images, and also as a way to build literal and conceptual “layers.” The process of folding the paper felt violent, and yet the images belie a sort of tenderness despite their chaotic arrangements. In the end, despite piggybacking off of my previous project, this time felt less about proving myself and my work to my peers, and more just myself having fun. Instead of trying to challenge the separation of fine art and birding, I feel more like I am navigating for myself a place to explore a form of birding that is art.
